Maine Company Receives Governor's Award
Portland, ME - Maine Governor John E. Baldacci recently presented a 2005 Governor’s Award for Business Excellence to Fortune, Inc., a Portland-based canvas and upholstery manufacturer. The award is administered by the Maine Dept. of Economic and Community Development and was created as a vehicle for recognizing Maine businesses that demonstrate a high level of commitment to their community, employees and to manufacturing or service excellence. According to Gov. Baldacci, “(Fortune, Inc.) embodies the innovative spirit that has earned Maine a reputation for top quality workmanship and service.” The Governor also noted Fortune’s strong record of community service and workforce investment during his presentation of the award.

Fortune, Inc. was founded as a sail loft in 1946 by Richard Fortune, Jr. Over the years the company expanded and contracted with changing times – adding or discontinuing services as the market demanded. Today, with its third generation of Fortunes at the helm the company is recognized as a premier manufacturer of custom marine canvas products and marine interiors. The Fortune client list reads like a veritable who’s who of prominent boat builders, service and repair yards and marinas. Sabre Yachts, S. Casco; Hinckley Yachts, Southwest Harbor; Wilbur Yachts, Southwest Harbor; Ellis Boat, Southwest Harbor; Hodgdon Yachts, E. Boothbay; Padebco Custom Boats, Round Pond; Maritime Skiff (MA), Eastern Boats (NH), Lyman Morse Boatbuilding Company, Thomaston and many others all use Fortune, Inc. custom interiors and enclosures on their new boats. In addition, many of Maine’s finest service yards, including Boothbay Region Boatyard, Southport Island; DiMillo’s Marina, Portland, Wayfarer Marine, Camden; Rumery’s Boat Yard, Biddeford and others turn to Fortune for retrofits and upgrades for their customers.

The company has its home office and largest manufacturing facility on Riverside Industrial Parkway in Portland. A satellite facility in Southwest Harbor services customers downeast and a third location will open soon in Camden to better serve mid-coast area customers. The company employees more than 25 people at these three locations. Company Vice President Rick Fortune has been a member of the Maine Marine Trade Association Board of Directors for a number of years and is currently serving as President of the Association.
